Interview Dr Waseem Abbas, Scientist at SAL
HERMES has the potential to significantly enhance communication technologies [...] ultimately enhancing the quality of life for European citizens. |
Dr. Abbas, could you please introduce yourself to our readers?
Certainly! I'm currently working as a scientist at Silicon Austria Lab (SAL). In my educational background, I completed my PhD at Sungkyunkwan University South Korea, in July 2022. I spent five and a half years conducting research in the field of millimeter waves (mm waves) and Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFIC). My research focused specifically on mm-wave design, particularly for transceivers. After completing my PhD, I served as an assistant professor at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Islamabad, Pakistan, for one semester. Dr. Abbas, could you give us an overview of the HERMES project? Certainly! The HERMES project is primarily focused on developing a high-frequency transmitter and receiver for 6G application, with a particular emphasis on implementing the Walsh theory. In the HERMES project, I am involved in Work Package 3 (WP3), which brings into play the frequency synthesizer, for transmitter, and receiver circuit. I'm working diligently to ensure that these tasks are completed within the set deadlines. What role does SAL play in supporting the HERMES project? SAL is actively contributing to three crucial aspects of the HERMES project. Firstly, we are engaged in Work Package 1 (WP1), where we are exploring artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Secondly, in Work Package 3 (WP3), we are working on the frequency synthesizer component. Lastly, in Work Package 4 (WP4), we are focused on completing various measurement tasks. Our multidisciplinary involvement underscores our commitment to the success of HERMES. Could you share how you became involved in the HERMES project? Certainly! I am specifically involved in WP3 and WP4, where I work on measurements and frequency synthesizer design. I initially joined Silicon Austria Lab (SAL) and later learned about the opportunity to contribute to the HERMES project through my supervisor. It felt like a perfect fit for my expertise and interests. What impact can the HERMES project have on European citizens? If the HERMES project achieves its objectives and successfully implements the proposed transmitter and receiver designs, it has the potential to significantly enhance communication technologies. This improvement could be particularly beneficial in fields such as medical imaging and various other applications, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for European citizens. |
Is it crucial to you and SAL that this innovative technology is funded by Europe for Europe?
Absolutely. It's essential for us that Europe invests in cutting-edge technology like HERMES. Supporting projects like this helps foster technological advancements within Europe, boosting innovation and competitiveness on a global scale. How does the HERMES project align with SAL's overall strategy? The HERMES project is closely aligned with our research area, leveraging our expertise in millimeter wave (mmW) technology. We are well-equipped to provide facilities, especially for high-frequency circuitry. Collaboration within the HERMES project is vital for us, as it allows us to strengthen our research capabilities and contribute to advancing European technology. What motivated you to work in Europe on a European project like HERMES? I chose to work at Silicon Austria Lab (SAL) because I was seeking opportunities related to my field after completing my PhD. I was particularly drawn to the European work culture, which places a strong emphasis on work-life balance and values innovation in the research landscape. Lastly, how is the HERMES project benefiting your career development? The HERMES project has been a valuable experience for my career development. It has allowed me to expand my knowledge in frequency synthesizers, oscillators, and phase-locked loops (PLL). In this project, I'm involved in designing frequency synthesizers, which directly relates to my expertise. I'm also working on optimizing circuits through extensive fitting processes. The HERMES project offers a unique learning experience, different from my previous endeavors, and it's definitely helping me acquire new skills and knowledge. |
